124. Texas-San Antonio Preview - How will the Roadrunners fare out as one of the new kids on the block? | Armchair Report is a trademark of Sport Media Report, LLC

Overview

One of 4 new FBS teams, the Roadrunners had an okay first season, holding their own against some good FCS squads but playing a few lower division minnows too. The WAC may have lost their better teams, but those left behind are more than a step up from the likes of Minot State. Wins will be hard to come by.

Offense

Or the Eric Soza show as it is also known. The junior QB not only threw every
meaningful pass for the Roadrunners, but also came second in rushing, leading the team in carries. WR Kam Jones provided a reliable target for Soza. With 10 starters back, the offense should be able to move the ball some against WAC defenses, but they need an RB to step up and provide a consistent threat. Some stability on the offensive line after changing combinations frequently last season would also be nice.

Defense

Coach Larry Coker (yep, him!) has installed the trendy 4-2-5 and the Roadrunners took to it like ducks to water in their first season, allowing just 3.5 ypc and forcing 21 turnovers. Last season, it was the defense that kept UTSA in games and this year, with just one starter gone, the youthful defense should get better, even if the stats don’t show it against tougher competition. Coker’s done a good job recruiting speed - lets see if it pays off.

5 Players to watch out for

  1. QB Eric Soza - he’s no RG3, but he’s a competent dual threat who threw for 2148 yards and 14 scores in 10 games last season. He’s the leader of the offense, and depth behind him is unproven. He also has a solid group of receivers to throw to, led by...
  2. WR Kam Jones - the freshman came on strong down the stretch and finished with 39 catches for 578 yards and 2 scores, while also rushing for 157 yards and another score. With a year under his belt, he could explode despite the increase in competition.
  3. RB David Glasco II - he only rushed for 160 yards despite 8 starts last season, but he tabbed 5 TDs. He was much improved in the spring and is currently top of the depth chart. He’s big enough to carry a pretty hefty workload too.
  4. MLB Brandon Reeves - the leading tackler from last season with 69, he got to the ball in a hurry and showed a nose for making plays with 6 sacks. He’s not that big and needs his D-line to keep him clean, but lack of success won’t be due to lack of effort.
  5. Dawg Nic Johnston - another impact freshman last season, Johnston is a good sized safety who could make a name for himself this season. With 59 tackles, 9 for loss, and 2 picks in 2011, Johnston makes good use of the freedom allowed by his rover role.

Prediction

Every game will be tough for a team that’s still learning the ins-and-outs of FBS football, but I’d be surprised if they couldn’t split their OOC schedule and sneak a WAC game or two. 3-4 wins should be possible.
